The following excerpts are from Catherine Fedorcheck's "Monroe Co. Ohio Records" Volume 1":
Joshua and Cassa were probably married in Maryland and they then moved to what is now known as Fairmont, West Virginia. Joshua was a lay-minister in the Methodist Church and held services around the Jackson Ridge area. At one time Joshua had been named in a suit filed by a neighbor for being too friendly with the neighbor's wife. What happened was that on several instances the wife left his bed and board and took refuge at the Hawkins' . The husband filed for divorce and named Joshua and John in the suit. When Joshua died there had been a beg snow storm, and the only way people could get around was by sleigh. There were over twenty sleds at his funeral, which would be considered a very good turnout.
Johua Hawkins was a member of the Methodist Church, and while not an ordained minister, did conduct services for his neighbors in Monroe County, in the absence of a regular or circuit minister. He is buried in the Fairview Methodist Churchyard, also known as the Old Log Church.
His whereabouts between the date of his birth in Maryland in 2780 and the birth of his twin sons, James and Levi, in Harrison County, West Virginia (Now Marion County) in 1821 are unknown, but he may have resided in Loudon County,
Virginia and also in Pennsylvania. Joshua Hawkins' firs wife was Cassa Tracy, and they were probably married about 1805-07 in Maryland.
According to the 1850 census, Joshua Hawkins was living in Monroe Co. Ohio, Center Township, was a farmer, and worth about $1,200.00. He emigrated to Monroe County between 1834 and1835 from Fairmont, West Virginia, (now Marion County, but then Harrison County, Virginia), He had a brother, Rev.. William Hawkins, Born in Maryland in 1766, died in Paw Paw Township, Marion County West Virginia on November 5 1855 aged 89 years. There was also a sister, Ruth born in Maryland in 1769, who died February 1,1869, aged 99 years, who was unmarried and lived with Rev. William Hawkins.
Johua Hawkins and his family with the exception of Elizabeth who married Jeremiah Hess, moved to Monroe County, Ohio sometime between the the marriage of Elizabeth in 1834, in Virginia and the marriage of Mary in 1835 in Ohio.
The Harrison County Order book (1828-1829) shows that Joshua Hawkins was to be a surveyor on the road leaving Lewis Veaches to the mill on Buffalo Creek.
